I'm such a naughty girl for picking this one up. I had watched the movie 'Quills' and became terribly curious about Marquis de Sade.
After the first 20 pages, I must say that my cup of interest was filled in it's entirety, but I kept reading because the perversion of his writing was so unbelievable and even humorous. (I must state, that this novel is considered his most joyous writing. MOST of the sexual escapades in in violent deaths.) I couldn't believe that a man could have such a cre hehe. In between sexual interludes in which three libertines teach their ways to an innocent young woman during a remarkably active and productive orgy, de Sade espouses in long rants his views on religion, sex, politics and morality. In fact, as entertaining as it is, after a while it becomes quite clear that the sex is the titillating (see what I just did there?) vehicle he uses to showcase his views. It is exceedingly naughty and shocking of me to have picked up this book.;) It is provoking, it's rather disgusting, it's carnal, and it's over-the-top to the point of humourous. The way of Libertine life is to deprive oneself of absolutely nothing, to take whatever Nature puts in your head to desire, regardless of the cost to the world around - a pretty perverse and frightening way to live. Cruelty, de Sade believes, is 'natural', and who are we to tamper with nature? Many of his ideas are repellant (particularly his approval of incest).
However, I did find de Sade's views on women surprising. A case could be made that his beliefs are empowering to women. He firmly believes in their sexual fulfilment (of course, in a libertine way) and their power over their bodies (he is most definitely 'pro-choice').Recommended to those interested in a) debauchery b) philosophy c) this very unique historical figure who's left his soiled handprint on many, whether they admit it or not. First of all I have to say that, it is extremely disturbing, shocking and shivery. But when I left aside these thoughts I saw the light. Sade is courageous, independent, rebellious. He questions morality, religion, traditions, sexism and every dogma which makes our lives difficult.
He is so cruel, but impressive because he is rebels against the rules we accept in all our life without questioning. So, it has to be hard, noisome and convulsive. There is only one thing disturbed me when I was reading the book: his portrayal women is weak. Female characters in the book are not thinking or talking like women. They are talking with men's brain and mouth. It is something acceptable because of the era he live and write. For his era Sade is a gorgeous writer.

There were some brilliant lines in this, though, that have stuck with me till this day. It's not for everyone, but I enjoyed it - and this edition is also beautiful! (If a little sexually explicit.).
Judge this book by the cover. This is probably the wickedest and the weirdest book I’ve read to date. I don’t recommend Marquis de Sade to anyone.
Why did I read this trash? I wanted a challenge. I also read this because I’ve been interested in de Sade for some time now thanks to Grant Morrison’s Invisibles and the movie Quills. I was curious to see how de Sade wrote and how far he could push the envelope.Philosophy in the Boudoir pushes the envelope to the max.

Almost every sin and bad thought is in this short piece of work.
One might feel bad or sick reading most of the passages. De Sade is intentionally offending you as a reader. This book promotes anarchy, atheism, and immoral acts. However, as a reader you have the power to read this book as a work of fiction.I decided myself to read this book like something by Machiavelli. Oddly, this book reminded me of the Prince.
I don’t know too much about de Sade’s life, but I wonder just how much of this he actually thought. Maybe he was just trying to offend his readers. You could say this is what happens when a philosopher writes porn. Can you even call this porn or erotica? There is a ton of sex in this book.
You could call this porn or erotica, but there is so much going on. It’s hard for me to place this book anywhere. There is a bit of philosophy mixed into this book, hence the title.
I don’t agree with most of de Sade’s philosophy, but at times, he makes good points. I’m not atheist. I’m not fully Christian either. I question many things. This book flat out tells you God doesn’t exist.
Unlike some other atheist books, this one didn’t bother me as much though.I wonder if de Sade wrote the book today he’d be sent to prison. Today, you read all kinds of things and you even see them on screens. Porn movies didn’t exist during de Sade’s time. Most of the stuff in this book you can find on PornHub if you look long enough, that is, if you want to look that long. For the introduction of this book, de Sade was a human being. He liked dogs, gardened, was into architecture, played games, and actually had good hygiene (which I was a little suspired with). However, his sexual interest is where his flaws showed up.
One could say he was insane.Another reason I read this book is that I was told not to read Marquis de Sade. I don’t believe in censoring ones taste in books. People should read what they want to read. De Sade is a perfect example of this too. When I was in college, I did this huge project on banned books and book burning. I don’t remember bringing de Sade up, but ever since that project I’ve constantly thought about the topic. Should people read books they’re told no too?
These days I leave it up to the reader. However, I don’t agree with people telling other not to read a book just because they didn’t agree with the context.I know this review is long and I haven’t talked about the plot of this book as much or the characters, but I’m not going too. The cover of this book pretty much tells you what you’ll find in this book and then some. This is the book I’ll read, but I won’t fully talk about every little thing. I’m still trying to figure out what I just read myself.
One thing about the characters though, for a porn, they were developed and interesting. To end this review, I’ll state that this is one book that won’t be leaving my mind anytime soon. Marquis de Sade is one of the most dangerous and interesting authors, I’ve read. Will I read his other books? I’m not even sure. I just might.
Not any time soon. De Sade is someone you read once and you still hesitate to read anything else by him.Forgot to add that I give major props for Penguin to publish this and to use that cover too. Love they aren't afraid to publish stuff like this and make it affordable too. My only criticism with this edition is there are no notes or footnotes when needed.
It would have been helpful at times. Nevertheless, the cover is shocking, but I like the art. Of all the treatises I've read on the joys of anal sex with a cabal of debauched, French super-libertines—and trust me, I've read, like, hundreds—this one's easily the most—wait for it—accessible. Some seriously naughty shizz going on here, in between bouts of philosophical musings on why it's one's natural obligation to engage in anal sex with a cabal of debauched, French super-libertines, of course. And on a purely superficial level, the cover for the new Penguin Classics edition is ridiculously awesome. For de Sade, this is pretty good. There's a long discussion of the role of morals in the republic that is interesting, if debatable.
As erotica, it is strictly chinese menu stuff. Bob'll have erotic act number one, Sally number two, and the Chevalier two orders of number seven, and then we'll all trade cartons. Makes me wonder if de Sade ran out of ideas. This is the only Marquis de Sade's book which I managed to read from the start to the end.As usual, de Sade gave us a lot of things to wonder about, although sometime the story drags on and on because de Sade loves to insert pages after pages of philosophic speeches in between sex scenes (and oh boy those sex scenes are as weird and dry as they can get). Sure as hell a lot of stuff de Sade mentioned and suggested are highly questionable, but I admire his boldness nonetheless. I used to think the Marquis de Sade was a sadist, because the term was derived from his name. But no, he is much more, and the label he assigns himself fits him perfectly - a libertine. The sex scenes, though wild, are passionless, devoid of anything except the senses, which makes it as mundane as enjoying a juicy cheeseburger. This is supposedly because of natural inclination and because (a) males have a more pleasing ass shape with rounder butts, whereas women's butts tend to be wider, and (b) males have softer pinker assholes (???).PLEASE note: I am not against homosexual behavior in any way. This text is written completely in dialogue. It tells the story of a teenager being schooled in sex. It has the potential to be interesting, but the sex scenes are strange since they are written only in dialogue, and in between each of these scenes, there are long rounds of philosophical discussion. The philosophical argument is this: any desires we have are a part of nature, so any of our desires should be allowed and encouraged. Some of this argument makes sense, but it is stretched to incest, murder, and rape.
It’s hard to know what Sade actually believes himself, but the ideas are clearly there to outrage and offend while providing a little satire as well. There were some interesting ideas thrown out in this book from the 1700’s, including feminist and pro-gay mentalities, but some of them would quickly be contradicted. If you’re reading it for the sex, remember that it’s just dialogue. If you’re reading it for the philosophy, keep in mind that it’s highly repetitive. Every once in a while, something interesting would happen, but overall, meh. This was my first literary venture into De Sade's work. I've watched Salo, and I've come across numerous philosophical works that reference him, so I was very intrigued and excited to read this.Firstly, I very much enjoyed it. The overall reading experience is a lot of fun, and of course, erotic.
However, the dialogue and actions are laughable at times, most likely due to its anchor in the vernacular of its time, but also the sheer immensity of certain mindsets, especially those of Dolmance.Besi This was my first literary venture into De Sade's work. I found it terribly interesting, and obviously debatable.De Sade's violent approach to atheism comes across quite directly. It is definitely a very early work of atheistic literature, with a focus on pure instinct. De Sade excavates the religious individual's (and the atheist's) worst nightmare of atheism.
Using Darwinism as a brush, he paints a picture of society without morals, and explains why the lack of morality can become the very fabric of a successful 'republic'. All this, punctuated by lewd and lascivious behaviour.Overall, terribly interesting stuff and just my kind of read. His command of language is very rare to find in literature. He's concise but descriptive - too descriptive for some.Anyone who knows the history of de Sade knows that he wasn't a man to hide behind appearances for the sake of keeping with social norms or etiquette, even for his own benefit. He unabashedly told it like it was, or more aptly, showed it like it was. He wasn't timid about painting people's true nature, one of debauchery and depravation. Some have accused him of creating nothing more than high class pornography dressed up in ravishing vestments. You can be the judge. A group of libertines take a young lady and educate her in all sorts of dark philosophies, like women becoming sex slaves to find freedom; sodomy appreciation; not helping those less fortunate; that what ultimately matters is your pleasure, even if others are caused pain by your actions.

The picture is of a man fondling a woman into climax. The back of the cover is the man kissing the woman on the stomach while holding her down by the neck; the woman is completely red in the back picture, showing she is more excited than before. The inside flaps of the cover are even more exciting.
The left flap is of a chandelier and the woman’s top half swinging wildly. The right flap is interesting because it’s completely different from the others, it has the bottom half of a realistic horse, but no genitalia is present.I also found the bio of Sade extremely interesting. He was so sexually deviant, they threw him in jail!
After I read that, I felt the book might be promising. As it turns out, the beginning was interesting.
I thought it was quaint that they’d say things like “I’m dead, I’m shattered” during climax. The second half of the book was disturbing and slow, just Dolmance going on and on about his libertine philosophy. The last bit veers towards erotic horror and that’s when I could see why they locked Sade up.My favorite piece of this writing happens on page 157, when Sade manipulates the imagination of the reader. The rascal knew how to express himself with words. Although it completely grossed me out, giving it only 1 star wouldn’t have been honest on my behalf because let’s face it, the guy was a genius at writing. Ignoring the fact of WHAT he was describing (cheap pornography), he had such talent with his plume that he made the imagery jump out of the page, flawlessly. The reader is there, living and experiencing all the disgusting, immoral, indecent, and illegal things he describes, one can’t help it, and it takes true talent to do that.

Too bad he focused it on these topics. In terms of the philosophy itself, at times it was a bit dull. One thinks that only a complete and utter psychopath could think even half the things he mentions, so his being imprisoned and institutionalized as a result is no surprise. What DOES surprise me though the level of sophistication in the proclamation of his ideas.
The fact that an aristocrat from the 18th century not only thought these things, but actually wrote about them, published his ideas and probably put it into practice, is mind-blogging. I salute his courage, or insanity. Or both.Anyhow, I was prepared to skip all the ultra philosophy stuff when I read somewhere that this was actually a satire in response to Rousseau’s and Marat’s writings since he practically answers them point by point. And then it all made sense. It became much more pallatable. I started to pay attention again. The best I can say is that it was an interesting read. Extremely violent, not only physically but to the psyche, so I can’t recommend it to anyone.
I can cross out the Marquis de Sade from my to-read list now since I did my duty and will never read him again. De Sade veers between pornography and political theory in a series of dialogues; I definitely found the latter more interesting. Especially as some of group sex goings-on seemed logistically infeasible. The book is worth reading for De Sade's fascinating political views. This seems fair enough, considering the book is meant to be a sort of textbook to lead young girls astray. On the one hand De Sade condemns homophobia, women's subjugation in marriage, and intolerant religious laws in a manner that feels oddly contemporary. On the other, he argues that murder should be legal and women have no right whatsoever to refuse sexual advances. It's impressive how shocking De Sade can still be, more than 200 years after he wrote this book.In his arguments for greater freedom, De Sade the libertine appears to be a forerunner of today's libertarians. This amused me as nowadays libertarianism is heavily associated with economics, something De Sade clearly couldn't care less about.
I read Philosophy in the Boudoir just after finishing The End of History and the Last Man by Francis Fukuyama, and was delighted to find similarities between the two. For example, both Fukuyama and De Sade note that in a democratic society of equal rights, the individual desire for mastery still needs an outlet. Whereas Fukuyama suggests sport, De Sade firmly believes that the solution is sex.
